We are looking for a creative, strategic, energetic and inclusive leader who can visibly lead a team of 40, and a virtual community, to halt and reverse global biodiversity loss through international development programming, legislation, regulation, negotiations and ensure that this is underpinned by world class science and evidence. This team is spread across a range of locations in the UK with international negotiations requiring regular travel, high personal resilience and strong interpersonal skills. You must be highly strategic and able to think tactically and quickly and horizon scan over the longer term and wider landscape.
We are facing the unprecedented and interdependent crises of climate change and biodiversity loss. These two challenges together are the most pressing issues of our time and an existential threat to human welfare, prosperity and life on earth. Globally, biodiversity is declining faster than at any time in human history, and the world is still heading for a temperature rise in excess of 3°C this century – far beyond the Paris Agreement goals of limiting this increase to 1.5°C. Around 1 million species already face extinction unless urgent action is taken to address the key drivers of biodiversity loss. More than three quarters of the Earth’s land surface have been significantly impacted by human activity and just 16% of our natural ecosystems remain relatively intact. Urgent and specific action is needed by 2030 to halt and reverse biodiversity loss, help the poorest become more resilient to climate change and keep 1.5 degrees within reach.
We are looking for a Deputy Director to become the Head of Delegation to the Convention on Biological Diversity and lead on CITES and the Convention on Migratory Species negotiations. You will also lead on domestic implementation of the Global Biodiversity Framework through the development of the UK’s NBSAP, and implementation of the landmark DSI negotiation at COP16. You will lead a Division focused on tackling the illegal wildlife trade, overseeing UK regulations to manage the imports and exports of endangered species, and the passage of flagship legislation on Hunting Trophies.
