Volunteering Events around the UK

We’ve listed some volunteering opportunities below that are being held by a range of external organisations throughout August. These are not CSCEN affiliated events but provide inspiration for the types of volunteering that you might like to undertake. Look out for volunteering opportunities near where you live on Eventbrite and share with colleagues. Please read the general advice on the Volunteering Hub page before signing up to an activity to make sure it suits your needs. 


London 

Wildlife Surveying at the Paddock, Ferry Lane (dates throughout August) | Eventbrite

·       Hear a short talk on a species or wild-life related topic each week and conduct a guided survey of the site to help develop the Paddock into a Local nature Reserve.

·       Surveys include: birds, meadow plants, bond, butterfly, moth, dragonfly and bumblebee.

Community Conservation Volunteering at Berrylands Nature Reserve, Surbiton, 10th, 13th & 27th August at 10:30 | Eventbrite 

·       Work to care for, maintain and improve the local community green space, and no previous experience necessary.

·       Activities include managing areas of woodland and scrub, planting and caring for new trees, bulbs and other plant life, constructing habitat for local wildlife and much more.


South West 

Exeter: Teign Greens Volunteer Gardener Morning at Oxen Park Farm, 10th August at 9:30 | Eventbrite

·       An opportunity to learn about sustainable community farming doing activities including planting and weeding, and no experience is necessary.

Bristol/ Bath: River Detectives – Flood Watch Volunteer Information and Training Event, Midsomer Norton, 8th August at 16:00  Eventbrite

·       An opportunity to learn more and to gain confidence in recording observations of our local watercourses. You'll be introduced to the survey form, helpful training materials and the BART online platform.


East 

Suffolk: Growing Trees for Climate Resilience and Agroforestry, Debenham, 21st September at 10am | Eventbrite

·       Overview of the Community Tree Nursery, how they plan, grow and provide trees from locally collected seeds, with a particular focus on hard to grow species, and a guided walk of the site and other projects.


North West 

Welly Brigade Habitats Restoration, Sandscale Haws, 10th August at 11am | Eventbrite

·       The Welly Brigade are a monthly volunteering group from Barrow who work on habitat creation around Barrow and Walney.

·       Involves working with rangers to help with habitat creation and learn about the wildlife in one of the most important ecological sites in the country.


Yorkshire 

Tree Thursday Fence Removal and Litter Pick, Middleton, 15th August at 10am | Eventbrite

·       Ranger-led volunteer group focussed on practical conservation in the woods.


Wales  

Lost Peatlands Project Sphagnum Planting – Cregan HRA, Glyncorrwg, 13th August at 10am | Eventbrite

·       Guided tour of various sites where you’ll receive information on the Lost Peatlands Project’s as well as the opportunity to get stuck in with some sphagnum planting.


Scotland 

Conservation Volunteers – Calderwood, West Lothian, 25th August at 10am | Eventbrite

·       Help maintain the Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) by cutting back vegetation in the fen to reduce the spread of yellow flag iris, and encourage the growth of meadowsweet and wild angelica.


North East 

Help & Enjoy Local Park – Green. Northumberland Park, 7th August at 10am | Eventbrite

·       Tasks vary but can include path resurfacing, weeding, clearing path edges and bee and butterfly surveys.


Northern Ireland 

Ragwort Pulling Party, Slievenacloy Nature Reserve, 3rd August at 9:30 | Ulster Wildlife

·       This unique site is managed sensitively with grazing livestock, although ragwort is toxic to livestock so can lead to poorly grazed areas if it is allowed to dominate. Help pull up as much ragwort as possible to protect this precious habitat, and afterwards attend a short guided walk of the nature reserve.
