Birmingham Volunteering Day - Canal and River Trust, 13th August
Spend the day volunteering in Birmingham on the 13th August from 9:30am-3pm, with the Canal and River Trust!
Activities on the day will include litter picking using grabbers, nets, and grappling hooks to get a whole range of sizes of litter from the areas around the canal and within the water itself as well as gardening activities such as weeding and cleaning.
Typical Plan
9:30 am – 10:00 am Arrival to site and assigned PPE. Followed by the Pre-work Briefing and Health and Safety talk.
10:00 am – 12:30 pm Walk to the location of the days works. Then beginning the task.
12:30 pm – 1:00 pm Lunch break. Not every site will be in easy walk to shops so everyone should bring their own refreshments with them.
1:00 pm – 2:30 pm Continuation of assigned tasks.
2:30 pm – 3:00 pm Pack up and clean up of site before the end of the session.
3:00 pm The exact time for the end of the session is flexible due to many factors such as weather, completing the task earlier than expect etc. But all sessions will finish by 3:00 pm at the latest.
Location: within 5 miles of central Birmingham and accessible by public transport (precise location to be confirmed)
Equipment & clothing: All equipment for the tasks will be provided including all relevant protective gear. We advise that you assess the weather conditions prior to your departure and dress according to the forecast. The conditions of the towpath will change based on the weather conditions. The towpath area may be brick, which can become slippery when wet or it can be gravel or dirt which may have persisting mud several days after rain. Please do not bring valuables to the site as we cannot be responsible for their safe storage. All volunteers must wear appropriate closed toe shoes on the day, or they will not be allowed to use any hand tools should the task require them to do so.
