‘Gene Drive Mosquitoes - Bioengineering in practice’ 25 April 2-3pm

The Government Office for Science hosts a Science and Society Webinar Series. Our next webinar is on World Malaria Day, the 25th of April at 2-3pm, with a premier of the documentary film ‘Gene Drive Mosquitoes - Bioengineering in practice’ and a conversation with the producer Professor Sarah Hartley and her research collaborator Dr Aleksandra Stelmach, followed by an audience Q&A.

Gene drive mosquitoes: Bioengineering in practice is a short documentary film that is beautifully shot in Uganda and explores Ugandan stakeholders’ hopes for gene drive mosquitoes – a radical new tool that offers a way to eliminate the mosquitoes that cause malaria.  Uganda could be one of the first countries in the world to release a gene drive organism and malaria is the main cause of death in Uganda, so the stakes are high.

The film builds on social science research at the University of Exeter in the UK and Makerere University in Uganda and shows the complexity of gene drive governance. There are numerous hurdles to be overcome before Ugandans can decide whether or not to release these mosquitoes.
