Green Commuting promoted in Bike Week

Plans are in developing in departments, agencies and locations across the UK to mark Bike Week organised by Cycling UK. The purpose of all of the activities and events held across government is to encourage more civil servants to consider greener options for their commute using bikes, e-bikes and active travel.

There are events planned to appeal to everyone from the cautious, uncertain novice wanting to explore the possibilities, through to experienced cyclists seeking better skills in riding, repairing and even refuelling after cycling. From Bikeability training for novices, to chain maintenance masterclasses, buddying for people learning new routes, to bike breakfasts for anyone cycle commuting to the office, there is a huge variety of plans hatching across government for Bike Week 2024. Please make contact with your department or agency cycling network to find out more about what is happening near you and help them promote it!

There is a whole day of Bikeability Cycling Training in Westminster operating from King Charles Street with an Introduction to Cycling for the complete beginner, Urban Cycling for those that want to be a bit more confident, Ride Leader training for the experienced cyclist. There is even an option to try some immersive reality cycling without going on a cycle on the road!! Sign up and get yourself confident on a bike, or ready to help someone else onto a bike.

Your help in promoting these opportunities for more people to make greener commuting choices by posting in channels within your department would be very welcome. Please encourage colleagues to book into a session so the team can plan staffing and cycles, and the following link has all the information you need to know: https://bikeability.wufoo.com/forms/bikeability-cycling-taster-sessions/.

For those based outside of London, local Bikeability training may also be able to provide courses for you. Details of your local team can be found by putting in your postcode to this tool: https://www.bikeability.org.uk/find-cycle-training/.

The Cross Government Cycling Network is working all year round to encourage people to make greener commuting choices. We have set up a KHub site to exchange ideas, experience and best practice. Anyone keen to encourage colleagues to cycle commute is welcome to join:

Step 1: Sign up to Khub for free (if not already a member)

Step 2: Follow link to Civil Service Cycling Network page

Step 3: Request access to group.

NB please include in the request notes something along the lines of ‘I am interested in collaborating across government to help promote cycling within my organisation’.

Please use this to make clear that you are keen to promote cycling and where.

Step 4: hit ‘subscribe’ to get notified of new content on the site by clicking the 3 dot menu on the right of the page and clicking 'subscribe'!
