Science and Society Seminar: Is societal conflict over net zero inevitable and what can we do about it?

The Government Office for Science invites you to this event for civil servants, with Professors Karen Bickerstaff, Simone Abrams and Patrick Devine-Wright.

Join us on Monday 9th December for a conversation with three leading interdisciplinary experts from the ACCESS project (Advancing Capacity for Climate and Environment Social Science), followed by an audience Q&A.

About this event

From ULEZ to power lines, initiatives that aim to reduce carbon emissions are beginning to provoke contestation and conflict across UK society.

In this seminar, a panel of social science researchers involved in the ESRC-funded ACCESS network will discuss whether societal conflict over net zero is inevitable and necessarily problematic, and what we could or should do about that.

The discussion will share evidence and insight from a number of different social science disciplines (human geography, anthropology, environmental psychology), drawing on issues including climate governance, land-use planning and public consultation.

In addition, we will share findings from the ACCESS Net Zero Citizens Panel survey on public perceptions of climate governance, specifically participatory approaches to policy making.
