Defence Green Network Webinar: Nature Recovery on the Defence Estate
The Defence Estate has long been described as the finest estate for wildlife in the UK. It supports more ‘Sites of Special Scientific Interest’ (SSSI) than any other landowner, with a wide range of habitats and species. However, the challenge of harmonising military training and Defence operations with this array of wildlife requires careful management and planning.
In response to the global nature crisis – characterised by collapsing ecosystems and rapid loss of species – the UK Government has set ambitious new targets for nature recovery. Within this, the MOD, as the department with the largest and most important estate, has an important role to play. Restoring habitats also delivers other ecosystem services, such as carbon sequestration and flood protection.
On Thursday 21 March we will be joined by Brian Appleby, Policy Adviser on land and the estate in the Climate Change and Sustainability team in MOD Head Office, and Olly Howells, Principal Ecologist in the DIO Ecology team. Together they will provide an overview of the importance of the Defence Estate for nature, emerging policy issues and targets, and examples of MOD delivery on the ground. Join us to hear about restoration and conservation activities for peatland, heathland, dunes, seagrass and more.
The webinar will run from 12:00-13:00 on MS Teams, with time for the speakers to respond to your comments and questions. For further information please contact: James Carrick (james.carrick105@mod.gov.uk), Cindy Levy (cindy.Levy657@mod.gov.uk), or Walter Scott (walter.scott513@mod.gov.uk).
